Miami International Boat Show with Bobby Unser February introduced 46 Cougar raceboat. Steve was a late driver change and replaced Dave Bell who had undergone open heart surgery the previous day. They were also on board when the Sun Coast to Gold Coast record (originally established by Kyle Petty) was broken in 1998. That record would be a precursor to the Miami to Nassau to Miami record run which is documented in this video. On Monday morning June 15 1998 the crew of Harry Allen throttle man Steve Kildahl driver Kevin Brown navigator and Rich Quandt crew chief left the Marriot Miami Marina and headed out Government Cut (MacArthur Causeway) to set three new American Power Boat Association world records. Dave Bell Great Lakes Executive Vice President was in the drivers seat with Harry at the throttles Rich Quandt crew chief and navigator and Eric Lavine as the onboard technician. Bob Hallengren of Caterpillar and Bobby Chan of Ringhaver provided valuable assistance in preparing standard production engines for their extended duty. 1998 Spirit of America set 2 world records Tampa to Miami and Miami-Nassau-Miami in May and June. The hull exterior, deck, bottom, and structure were visually examined and tested by percussive sounding. Moisture levels in the fiberglass and coring were measured with a GRP-33 electrophsics capacitance type moisture meter in strategic locations. Meter reads on 0-30 scale, 12% considered average, good and dry. Elevated numbers do not necessarily constitute a failure but can eventually lead to replacement or repair of structural members. Stringers were found to be considerably reasonably dry with low levels of moisture averaging 15%, which is good. No visual stress cracks detected and pricking with a pocket knife was unable to find any soft spots. Proper ventilation in the bilge can help maintain these low numbers over time. Transom was dry without issue Hull sides were inspected best possible and all appears good Bottom was not inspected because she lye afloat. Deck and hardware was inspected and found to be solid with no decay found. Soundings were good and no apparent delamination at this time. · Transom was dry with readings from 10% to 12%, · Bottom was not inspected at time of survey. · Deck was inspected and found to be dry 8% to 10% with no elevated moisture detected. · Cockpit sole (floor) was inspected and found to be dry · Deck hardware (Bow rails and Cleats) was inspected and found to be secure and wood coring below to be dry · Swim platform was inspected and found to be dry · Anodes (Zincs) on outdrives could be replaced · All hose are original with both cockpit drain hose showing age cracking.
