I have been a fan of the 31 since the original was introduced in 1989. At the time, the Jupiter, Florida-based company built about nine boats a year. Since 1999, Carl Herndon, an industry veteran and founder of Blackfin Yacht Corporation, has been in charge, running the company as a subsidiary of Jupiter Marine International Holdings, a publicly traded company that also owns Phoenix Yacht Corporation. Herndon increased production of the 31 to about 80 boats a year and redesigned the company's 27-foot model in 2000. When he set about refining the 31 for 2002, he based his effort on his own experience with the boat, and on customer input. "Our intention was to make the 31 more user-friendly without compromising her pedigree," he said. In my view, Herndon achieved his goal. The new 31 is a compliment to the mark and shares the same tasteful lines as her predecessor. She is distinct among her competition, as she is conservative by comparison. Her sheer has a gentle reverse sweep, and her stem rake is not exaggerated like that on some of her kind. She has a conventional transom with a custom engine bracket/dive platform, which I find more appealing and no less practical than the popular integral reverse transoms. While she has a high-performance hull design, she is no morphed muscle boat, and she sports no garish graphics. She will remain pleasing to the eye as trendier designs age. "Our boats are designed with features that will appeal to those who are serious about family fishing and cruising," Herndon said. With the latter in mind, the 31 is also available with an attractive low-profile cuddy that includes a V-berth/dinette and a vanity with sink. Whether it’s a kingfish tournament off North Carolina or billfish tournament off Miami, this is the boat that can put you in the winner’s circle. Contender 35 ST Review A serious fishing machine that can be tailored to virtually any style of offshore angling There’s no question that Contender’s 35 ST is a hard-core fishing machine, though the model we tested had at least two concessions to creature comfort. Like all Contenders, nearly everything within its 34½-foot vented hull was optional. “You tell us how you want it, and we’ll build it,” said Les Stewart, director of marketing for Homestead, Florida-based Contender Boats, as we idled away from Florida’s Sanibel Harbour Resort marina and headed out to the Gulf of Mexico. “Wait until you see how she runs,” Stewart added. ADVERTISING Performance With three Yamaha F300s on the transom, the 35 ST jumped on plane in three seconds, vaulting to 30 mph in six seconds — not bad for a boat with a wet weight of around 12,000 pounds. The triple outboards make a difference in hole shot versus twins. In prior testing with a pair of Yamaha F350s, the 35ST took 2.5 seconds longer to plane. At wide-open throttle, however, the extra 200 ponies gained only 1.5 mph over the twins, topping out at 6,000 rpm and 67.6 mph. Surprisingly, the triples get the same optimum fuel economy as the twins. The three F300s burned 1.6 mpg at 3,000 rpm and 32.7 mph. This results in a 576-mile range, with 10 percent reserve in the 400gallon fuel tank. Thanks to a pair of vents, the hull is very efficient. These create a cushion of air to reduce drag. “The aeration starts kicking in around 25 or 30 mph,” said Stewart, who estimates a 10 percent increase in mileage as a result. The 35 ST tracks well in hard-over maneuvers. This is due in part to the 24 degrees of deadrise at the transom. The deep-V hull also helps smooth out rough seas for a better ride. Fishing Our test boat was set up for Florida-style offshore fishing, beginning with a rocket-launcher helm seat with a wraparound backrest, six rod holders and five recessed drink holders, which often serve as storage for loose hooks and weights. In the aft section, there was a 96-quart Frigid Rigid cooler that cleverly pulled out on rollers for easy access. Combining it with 100 percent vinylester resin in Yellowfin’s infusion process, the Florida builder came up with a boat 20 percent lighter and 17 percent stronger than its predecessor, which translates into shallower draft, better fuel efficiency and faster top-end speed. Yellowfin also changed the deck layout. The Carbon Elite incorporates a forward 5-inch step for easier access to the front casting deck. Surprisingly, this 25 has more rod storage than many larger boats, with room for 18 stickss throughout the boat. The job of a large production-boat company is tosell as many boats as it can. But human nature dictates that tastesdiffer. What's a builder to do? Build a few boat models, trying tomake each appeal to a broad market spectrum? Some companies do, butthat kind of compromise usually makes nobody happy. Pro-Line foundan answer: make a greater number of models, but dedicate each boatto a specific function. The Pro-Line 25 Sport qualifies as adedicated fishing platform, but with certain creature comforts evenhard-core anglers will appreciate. Performance Admittedly, I haven't run an EFI engine for quite a while. TheMercury 250-hp Saltwater EFI outboard on the transom performedperfectly well, but being terribly spoiled by DFIs andfour-strokes, I'd just as soon stick to new technology. With thatsaid, EFIs have muscle. At 5,500 rpm, the Merc pushed around a veryheavy load of people, gear, ice, food and tackle at 44mph. We spent most of our foggy test day cruisingoffshore of the Florida Keys at 35 mph turning 4,200 rpm. Withgentle northeast winds at 10 knots generating 2-foot seas, nothingwe encountered offered the 25 Sport much of a challenge. Itremained bone dry and smooth running despite my best efforts tobeat it up. Turn the wheel hard over and this boat grabs the water.Everybody aboard had better be prepared and holding on if youchoose such radical maneuvers. The 25 Sport can alter course by 180 degrees injust about two boatlengths. Drift-fishing over patch reefs, I foundthat in a beam sea, the roll moment is surprisingly quick, but onlybecause the boat doesn't roll very far. Fishing The 25 Sport includes all the standard-equipment fishing featuresyou'd expect, such as a leaning post (ours had an optional livewellmodule), a fish box under the foldaway transom seat, room for threerods under each gunwale, two rod holders in each gunwale and atackle-box storage locker. Surprisingly, this 25 has more rodstorage than many larger boats, with room for 18 sticks throughoutthe boat.
