2004 Formula 37 PC This Formula 37 PC is a top-shelf family express whose aggressive good looks (note the reverse radar arch) and sumptuous interior are designed to appeal to upmarket cruisers willing to pay a little extra for the built-in quality of a Formula product. She's built on a beamy deep-V hull with prop pockets and a relatively modest 18 degrees of deadrise at the transom. The midcabin floorplan of the 37 PC is unusually wide open and spacious thanks to the absence of any interior bulkheads. Headroom is excellent, the decor is very elegant, and the furnishings and appliances are first rate. The cockpit, with its U-shaped lounge (which converts into a big sun pad), wet bar and triple-wide helm seat, can accommodate 10 passengers. So, is there a down side? Formula boats first gained national recognition in 1962 with their 233 model which earned several victories on the offshore powerboat racing circuit and Formula boats have long been known for the "go-fast" persona established by these early models. However, for over 20 years, Thunderbird Products, the parent corporation of Formula Boats, has also built performance cruisers. The 27 PC (Performance Cruiser) was introduced in 1994; it remains in production and is currently the smallest and most popular of the company's "cruiser series" of boats which includes models up to 41 feet. The overall length of the 27 PC is actually 28' 3'" including the molded swim platform. The design is in the genre of what has become known as mid-cabin sport cruisers, characterized by an open cockpit, slightly raised steering bridgedeck and accommodations below. Although not as extreme as some boats, the hull is still in the "deep-V" category and the 18 degrees of deadrise is a very good compromise for power and performance in this style of vessel. Displacement of the 27 PC is specified as 9,500 lbs. and, compared to five similar boats, is a whopping 33% heavier. Because manufacturers seldom specify under what load condition their displacement is measured, it is difficult to fully evaluate this weight difference but it certainly suggests a vessel more substantially constructed than the average. Formula 27 The 27 PC's hull and decks are constructed of a composite of hand-laminated fiberglass materials. A modified epoxy resin is used in the first two layers of construction in order to improve the appearance of the finish coat and provides greater resistance to osmotic blistering. Formula uses structural reinforcements, which includes a matrix of stringers and frames similar to other manufacturers and also adds supports into the hull bottom for added strength in areas below fuel tanks and engines. This 1997 Formula 280 SS looks just a few years old. Both owners have been retired, detail oriented friends who enjoyed cleaning and maintaining this vessel. Regular detailing and waxing has kept this one in great condition. Over the years, anything needing replacing or repairing was immediately completed with an open checkbook. You can see from the many pictures this boat has its own boat house. Lift kept and with full canvas covers also covering this boat. It has had a much pampered life. If you have any areas you want to see in a picture, I have dozens more to share. It is so clean, you cannot see to many pictures. Not only the condition is great but mechanically this one holds its own with much newer Formulas. The engines are Mercury 350 Magnum MPI Closed Cooled Horizons installed new in 2007 and currently have 266 hours on each. When they were replaced all associated systems were replaced as well. The engines are paired up to Bravo Three drives. Also upgraded with the engines was the installation of Mercury Smart Craft computers for each engine on the helm. These low hour Mercs make this cruiser run up to 55 mph with a full load of fuel and people. At 40mph these burn just 11 GPH each for almost 2 miles a gallon, full WOT is not much less. Anyone familiar with this model knows Formula has changed almost nothing over the years to the hull and interior of the 280 SS, it runs dry and solid and is one of Formula's best sellers. It offers day cruising for up to 8 people. Other additional pluses are an enclosed head, (4) diving tank holders, ski locker, multiple storage compartments, table/sun-pad for rear seating area, hanging locker, The other major upgrades and replacements included a complete cockpit and interior upholstery in 2008, and the dash and electronic gauges in 2014. Navigation is provided with a Raymarine RC435 full color chart plotter. Sound system is a Clarion CMD4A that is Sirius Capable. VHF communication is provided thru a West Marine 480 VHF. For summer, sunny days out on the water there is a full canvas Bimini for keeping cool from the sun. With oil changes regularly performed, regular maintenance kept up on all systems, and batteries replaced every two years, and with little more than a monthly day on the water, this one is beautiful and ready for its new owner. Why buy something that needs to be rebuilt or cleaned up as soon as you buy it? This one is great from day one and ready to run!
