1970 Herreshoff Nereia "Native" is a classic Herreshoff Nereia design in original configuration.  The designer L.Francis Herreshoff was possibly the most famous designer of clipper bowed ketches from 33' to 77'.  His most famous ketch design is "Ticonderoga". Herreshoff designed the Nereia class around 1948 and personally supervised the build of "Native" at the yard of Alain Vaitses in Mattapoisit Massachussets where she was completed in 1970.  Vaitses was originally trained and employed in the Herreshoff manufacturing company in Bristol RI. The Vaitses yard in MA probably built more Herreshoff ketches than any other yard. He and L.Francis Herreshoff worked on many projects together.   The original owner named her "Alaria of Boston" and had her specified and built to very high standards. She was sailed mostly in New England waters but also made many trips to the Bahamas. In 1998 she was bought by Master Shipwright Peter Boudreau who built Pride of Baltimore I and II, the schooner Virginia as well as many other large wooden vessels. Native arrived in the Chesapeake Bay in 1998 and has been sailing in the bay ever since. The current owner has been sailing her out of Deltaville since 2005. She is a boat that has been lovingly maintained.  Recent upgrades include:New Main Mast 2011New Tri color masthead light 2011New Rudder 2009New Chainplates - 2011New Garmin GPS and Radar - 2013New Radio 2012New Tiller 2009
