In 1927, Chris Smith's son Jay took control of the company, changing the name to Chris Craft and for the next 31 years became the world's largest producer of mahogany runabout boats. During WW2, Chris Craft aided the war effort by building over 12,000 military vessels including patrol boats, launches, and rescue vessels for the US Navy. With the end of the war came prosperity for many and Chris Craft benefitted by supplying speed boats that became popular at lakes throughout the upper Midwest and Northeast. Utilizing manufacturing efficiencies learned in wartime, Chris Craft was able to expand its market to both middle-class and wealthy owners." Reason for selling is not enough time to use the boat.

Up for sale is a 1950 Chris Craft Special Runabout. This boat is in great condition for its age, and would be a perfect boat for a complete restoration. This boat has all the original hardware, good windshield glass, good upholstery, and has a fully rebuilt motor. The motor is a model K Hercules 95HP, which as stated above, has been completely rebuilt. I have all the paperwork and receipts regarding the rebuild from the previous owners. The bottom was re-planked a few years ago by the previous owners as well, and I have all that paperwork for it. The hull is in great shape, there are two minor places of rot above the water line and will need to be addressed prior to splashing the boat. All of the brightwork would love to be refinished although it could be used as-is. The trailer you see in the pictures comes with the boat, it is old and tired but should get you home (within 100 miles) . If you're traveling from a far distance I wouldn't recommend trailering this boat home, although that decision is yours to make. The boat has a clean and clear title, the trailer will come with a bill of sale. I can deliver for a fee! Up to 100 miles, no more than that.

This is a rare find in the boating world! She's still running and has provided countless hours of fun in the sun. This baby can really fly! Constructed of Philippine Mahogany and used last in 2008 and safely stored in our weather protected barn. Motor was serviced regularly during the time in use. Steel gas tank and mechanical steering added while I’ve owned it. Hate to part with it but need to consolidate. Can you see yourself in this classic? Very nice original boat in user condition that I've owned for 25 yrs and 2 complete strip and refinishes, however, at some point in the boats history someone changed the hatch cover to what looks like teak and had removed the front seat and made it a wrap around configuration with a gastly captains chair. I put the seating back in its proper order but had no idea what the exact build was. The boat has its original high performance KFL 131 twin updraft carb. Hercules engine. The engine has been rebuilt 500 hrs "estimate" ago and runs perfectly. The bottom is also original and in good condition and not destroyed by West System cold molded lay-ups, fiberglass, 5200 etc. but that's for you to decide. I have a piece of matching leather for the dashboard just never got around to pulling the gauges and trim. The boat is in need of refinishing which I will do when time permits, but will raise the price to what these boats now demand in great condition. Older but functional waterline cover and tandem trailer included. I recommend that you come and see it before bidding it will always look better in pictures and in my mind. Please don't bid unless you have perfect feedback or a good excuse...it's not hard.

For your consideration for the next seven days is a 1947 Chris Craft Special Runabout. Hull # R -16 -796 . This boat has undergone a complete restoration over the past several years and has won Best In Show awards at both shows it attended. First, the hull: She has a new 5200 style bottom with the best quality Bruynzeel Okume marine plywood available for inner layer and clear white cedar outer planking. The bottom framing was replaced using white oak as was original. All fastenings are new USA made silicon bronze. Fasteners are new, chromed brass, Frearson head screws on the chrome hardware and stainless Frearson, yes stainless Frearson ( I had them made) on the stainless rubrails, cutwater and flat trim. Engine: The engine is the original one to the boat. It's a Chris Craft Model K, 95 hp, 6 cylinder, based on the Hercules QXD series. The original pistons were cleaned and reused. If it ain't broke..... Valves and seats were ground and reused. Valve guides were replaced. Carburetor was rebuilt too. No, this was not an all-inclusive $9k rebuild with new everything. There was no need for it. This engine runs great with great oil pressure and starts every time. And it's 6 volt! Upholstery:All new upholstery using top quality marine vinyl to correct factory dimensions. Original style Kapok filling in cushionsNew correct style linoleum flooring for originality. Electrical:All new cloth covered wire matched to the factory original colors and sizes. Original gauges all function properly as does the original horn. New bilge pump. If someone was to pay to have a similar boat restored, the cost would be at least double the asking price here today. In 2014 this boat won the Best In Show awards at both the Southern New England and Baystate Woodies shows, scoring in the mid 90 point range both times. Up for sale for the first time since her total restoration in 1991 is this one of a kind 19’ Chris Craft 1950 Racing Runabout. Out of 503 R19 Racing Runabouts produced, she is the only craft to receive an ML 145hp engine and is one of 206 varnished hulls produced out of that number. Purchased in South Bend, Indiana in 1990, a two year painstaking restoration produced a boat that was exactly as she was made in 1950 at the Algonac, Michigan plant. This boat is as original as it gets from the Reed & Prince screws, seat cushions, 6v. system, original chrome and stainless to the diagonal inner planking with canvas and wood plank bottom. Years were spent researching the archives at Newport News to find only the rarest of boats. The hope is that you appreciate the endeavor to preserve history for future generations and respect the originality and integrity of R-19-291. She is better than the day she was made. Shown by appointment. Water test and Marine survey available at buyers expense.
