1985 Wauquiez Pretorien
The Wauquiez Pretorien, built in France, is a cruiser-racer, designed by Holman & Pye. At the time, they were, and still are, revered for the high quality of construction - solid fiberglass hull, sturdy SS chain plates, keel stepped mast, lead ballast keel, low profile cabin house, aluminum toe rail, and flawless stainless steel throughout. All of these qualities and more, made the Pretorien Hal Roth's boat of choice for sailing around the world., later the subject of his book "How to Sail Around the World".
1983 Wauquiez Pretorien
Jura is a well built, well kept sailing yacht that will provide great fun for the coastal cruiser and safety for the longer passages. Her interior wood work is in remarkably good shape and the boat is ready to go for her new owner. Jura has a great quarter berth, two settee/berths in the main salon, and a spacious V berth. Lots of storage, and nice sized galley and navigation station. She is priced fairly to move.
1984 Wauquiez Pretorien 35
The 35ft. Pretorien (a term that designates a soldier of the emperors guard) of which 212 were built between 1979 and 1986, is a Holman & Pye design.
Wide side decks, part of the "Euro-design" look of a low cabin trunk merging into a flush deck forward, are clean and safe for moving about. The aft cockpit is snug and comfortable under sail and at anchor,
Varnished teak with a beeswax finish sets the tone below. To starboard is a U-shaped galley with large storage cabinets and lockers, double round (but shallow) sinks, and the Wauquiez trademark: brown ceramic-tile countertops. The nav table to port is large enough to hold a folded chart and is well provided with bookshelves and space for instruments.
Aft, on the port side, there’s a cozy double cabin with a hanging locker. Under ample headroom, the main saloon has a large, centerline table, a U-shaped convertible banquette to starboard, and a single sea berth with lee cloth to port
Henri Wauquiez demanded high-quality construction in the boats that bear his name. The Prétorien’s hull is solid fiberglass, laid up with 18-ounce fabric, not 24-ounce, because resin saturation of the lighter cloth is achieved more reliably.
Wauquiez’ Pretorien 35 was constructed to high standards thereby producing a very strong, capable yacht with a well deserved and demonstrated “go anywhere” reputation. BOC competitor and multiple circumnavigator Hal Roth chose the Pretorien 35 as his last voyaging boat the story of which is recited in Roth’s book “We Followed Odysseus.”
